Eosinophilic furunculosis

Before treatment

eosinophilic furunculosis chin dermatitisAngel is a 7 year old female spayed black Labrador retriever that was diagnosed with eosinophilic furunculosis of the chin. Angel presented to our Dermatology service with the complaint of ongoing perioral and chin acne crusting and inflammation. Dermatological examination revealed a focal area of proliferative, friable, ulcerative to hemorrhagic plaque-like to nodular lesion over the ventral aspect of the chin and mild perioral and interdigital redness. A biopsy was performed of Angel’s nodular lesion on her chin which gave us her diagnosis.

After treatment

resolved chin dermatitisAngel was treated with antibiotics, glucocorticoids, and gastrointestinal protectants. Angel’s owners also performed topical therapy of warm water soaks daily to her chin and then applying a medicated ointment to her chin daily. Angel’s plaque-like to nodular lesion completed resolved with full hair re-growth to the chin area.

Dermatophytosis (Ringworm)

Before treatment

ringworm hair lossDuke is a 7 year old male neutered Maltese who was diagnosed with dermatophytosis (ringworm) and vasculitis. Duke presented to SVS with the complaint of previous footpad ulceration and sudden onset of symmetrical hair loss on his head and ears. Duke’s exam revealed focal and symmetrical hair loss with scaling and crusting inflammation on the head and ears, scaling and hair loss over the left shoulder and hocks, and focal areas of ulceration on the footpads. Cytology revealed numerous fungal spores, bacteria, and yeast.

After treatment

hair regrowth after ringworm treatmentDuke's secondary infection was treated with antibiotics. His fungal infection was treated with itraconazole and topical therapy with medicated shampoo and ointments. Duke’s secondary infection and ringworm resolved with full hair regrowth to his head and ears with no signs of relapse.

Allergic dermatitis

Before Treatment

allergic dermatitis - atopyBuddy is an 11 year old male neutered white West Highland Terrier that was diagnosed with Atopy, Staph/Malassezia Dermatitis, Flea Allergy, and Possible Food Allergy. Buddy presented to dermatology with a history of all four foot pruritis(itching/scratching). Buddy’s initial examination revealed multiple papules over his abdomen and thighs; redness to his abdomen, groin, and axillas.  All four of his feet were red with hair loss. Dermatology work up revealed the findings of bacteria and yeast from his skin and feet.

After treatment

resolved allergic dermatitisBuddy’s secondary infections were treated with medications as well as topical therapy with medicated shampoos and medicated wipes for his feet. He was also allergy tested (intradermal skin testing) and then started on allergy vaccine for his environmental allergies. Buddy was also placed on a strict food allergy diet of salmon and potato. Buddy’s secondary infections have resolved with full hair regrowth to his feet and he is currently being maintained on allergy vaccine, a strict food allergy diet, and topical therapy with medicated shampoos and wipes.
