The Internal Medicine service at Southeast Veterinary Specialists provides thorough diagnostic testing and treatment of many medical conditions. Our medical staff uses physical examination findings coupled with laboratory findings to medically manage a wide variety of problems affecting the gastrointestinal, endocrine, neurologic, and urogenital organ systems.
Appointments are scheduled on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday each week. Emergency medical appointments can be arranged by your veterinarian or through Southeast Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. No appointment is necessary to bring your pet in through the emergency service.
One of the most common diseases treated by the Internal Medicine service is diabetes. Diabetes can affect dogs and cats just as it does people. Signs of diabetes include weight loss, lethargy, and increased water intake. Obesity can be a predisposing factor in animals just as it is in people. Diabetes is diagnosed with a blood test and can be treated medically. A complication of diabetes called ketoacidosis occurs when the blood sugar is unregulated and can be life threatening. Cataracts and blindness can also result from uncontrolled diabetes.
