Southeast Veterinary Specialists

Referral Policies for Veterinarians

General information
Southeast Veterinary Specialists schedules appointments on a referral-only basis. A veterinarian can refer a case to our hospital online at www.svsvets.com or by phone at 504-219-0444. After a veterinarian has notified our reception staff of the referral, either the client or the veterinarian may call to set up an appointment. It is always helpful if the veterinarian can fill out a referral form with the signalment, history, and treatment information. A copy of our referral form can be downloaded in .pdf format here or filled out online. Please send copies of any pertinent laboratory results and radiographs with your client for the appointment.
Communication policy
Communication with our referring veterinarians is vital to our job as a referral hospital. We can provide written communication by either email or fax. Please inform our reception staff of your preferred method of communication, so that we can set this up properly for you. The method of communication can be different for each veterinarian at a single hospital, so please let us know what you would prefer.
Specialty services
Southeast Veterinary Specialists currently offers Internal Medicine, Surgery, Dermatology, Oncology, Radiology, and Physical Rehabilitation. Referral appointments are available for each service. It is not uncommon for a pet to need the services of more than one specialty, and consultation between services is commonly performed. When a client requests consultation from a service that is not related to the current (referred) problem, we will call you to request permission prior to proceeding.
Ultrasound services
Ultrasound services are available on an out patient basis when ordered by a veterinarian. Dr. Partington performs out patient ultrasounds on Thursdays, and communicates the results directly to the referring veterinarian by phone. A detailed written report is provided within a few days of the ultrasound to complete the medical record. If you wish to refer the case to SVS after the ultrasound, that can easily be arranged through the reception desk or consultation with one of our specialists.
MRI services
Since MRI requires general anesthesia, we require that the client meet with one of our specialists before the procedure. For this reason, it is not performed as an outpatient procedure and is scheduled through the most appropriate specialty service. Dr. Partington interprets all the MRIs performed at SVS and provides written and verbal reports.
